The Arran Data Project is a key workstream of the North Ayrshire Islands Programme and responds to the National Islands Plan commitment to support community-led approaches to gathering island-level data, improving local understanding of trends and supporting local planning.

Arran faces significant data gaps that limit effective local planning and decision-making. Current information on demographics, housing, transport, health and environmental indicators is fragmented or unavailable at island level, making it difficult for community, businesses, groups and public agencies to respond to local challenges and maximise opportunities.

To address this, the Project will develop a community-driven digital platform that transforms local data into clear and actionable insights. This initiative will enable faster, smarter decisions on issues such as housing, economic development, health and wellbeing, tackling inequalities and climate action. It will do this through:

• Addressing island‑level data gaps on Arran, focusing on areas such as housing, economic development, transport and climate This will include a comprehensive island‑level data gap analysis and the selection of priority areas for improvement and future data development.
• Creating a community‑driven data dashboard that provides accessible, real‑time insights to support local planning, decision‑making and service improvement. The dashboard will be developed in a way that is scalable and replicable across other islands.
• Developing and deploying a community data collection toolkit – including surveys, participatory mapping and citizen‑science approaches.
• Strengthening community‑led decision‑making by enabling island residents, groups, businesses and public agencies to make faster, smarter decisions using high‑quality, locally relevant data and facilitating informed dialogue between community stakeholders.
• Sharing learning across islands and national partners through policy briefings and learning.
• Developing an evaluation report with recommendations on scaling, impact, replicability and opportunities for integration into national island data strategies.
